BMW: A Brief History
BMW is an abbreviation for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. In English this translates into Bavarian Motor Works. The company was founded in 1916 and its headquarters is in Munich, Germany. The BMW Company manufactures motor vehicles, motorcycles, owns the MINI brand and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
As a result of the Versailles Armistice Treaty following World War I, BMW was forced to cease the production of aircraft engines which caused the company to shift into manufacturing motorcycles beginning in 1923. Automobiles followed in 1928. BMW Motorcycles are known under the name of BMW Motorrad.
The large scale production models for BMW are the 1 Series, the 3 Series, the 5 Series, the 6 Series, the 7 Series, the X3, the X5, the X6, the Z4, the M3, the M5, the M6 and the Z4 M. Classic cars manufactured by BMW over the years include the 3.0 CSL, the M1, M3, M5, M6, M Roadster, the Isetta 600 and 700 and many more.
The BMW Company began producing aircraft again in the 1930s with the approach of World War II on the horizon for the Luftwaffe, the German Airforce. Towards the 1960s BMW purchased the rights to manufacture the Italian Iso Isetta, which helped to get BMW back on its feet after a brief rough patch financially.
In 1994 BMW purchased the Rover Group which consisted of Rover, Land Rover, and the MG brands as well as the rights to Austin and Morris (two defunct brands). BMW owned the Rover Group for six years until they sold it in 2000. The only brand that BMW kept the rights to was the MINI brand, which was launched in 2001.
BMW Racing
BMW is known for not only its luxury coupes, sedans, convertibles, sport activity coupes and motorcycles but also for its racing vehicles and its involvement in the racing world. BMW has been involved in racing vehicles and motorcycles since the World War II era. Motorcycles were being raced by BMW during World War II at the Isle of Man TT competition.
BMW has entered cars in Touring car racing as well as Formula One, Formula Two, sportscar racing and the World Touring Car Championship. BMW took a break from Formula One racing for a handful of years but jumped back into it from 1997-2005 via the 24 Hours of Le Mans Tournament.
BMW developed Formula BMW in 2002 and it has been racing ever since then. The cars used in Formula BMW are designed for one driver and are known as single seater cars. The first car in this racing series was manufactured in 2001 as part of BMW Motorsport and won its first championship in Germany in 2002.
The Formula BMW team has won four championships across the world in Germany, the United States, Asia and the United Kingdom. In 2005 BMW created a special Formula BMW invitational event as part of the Race of Champions at the Stade de France in Paris. One driver from each of the four championship events was invited to the event. Robert Wickens won the event as the driver invited from the United States.
BMW racing has become a prominent part of the BMW trademark and continues to grow with each passing year. BMW pulled out of Formula 1 racing in 2009 (Read More).
The BMW Appeal
What makes BMWs so appealing to the public? What is the lure of the BMW? These questions are easy to answer. Just look at the features offered in each model that BMW manufactures for the auto market, look at the sleekness of the vehicles, look at the safety of the vehicles and look at the smooth ride offered by BMW vehicles.
Whether you like coupes, convertibles, sports cars, sports activity coupes or sports wagons then BMW is the perfect fit for you. All BMW makes and models offer a sleek design, a safe ride, a smooth ride and something to look at without a doubt. BMW manufactures its vehicles in some of the most appealing and popular colors.
Why is it that so many people not only in the United States but also worldwide love BMWs so much? Maybe it is the storied history of the company. Maybe it is the design. Maybe it is the sleekness of each model. For each individual BMW enthusiast there is a different reason for the love of Bimmers.
Sit next to a BMW at a traffic light and take a good, long look at the car. No matter what model BMW you are looking at, it is sure to grab your attention for a little more than a few seconds. You just can’t help but give BMWs a second and third look when driving alongside one or parked next to one in a lot.
If you ever get the chance to test drive a BMW you will more than likely fall in love with it on the spot. They are extremely safe, easy to handle, and are some of the smoothest riding vehicles on the market today.
